Looking for One Million

Sometime toward the end of the library’s fiscal year … by which I mean the third or fourth week of this June … our total circulation will probably cross the 1,000,000 per year mark for the first time.

As way of comparison, this is more than either the Peoria or Springfield libraries … and our library district has a much smaller population.

Our thanks must go to you, the reader or viewer or listener who borrows items from our – your! – library (and I should note that the use of electronic resources does not count).  This is an active community, a learning community, and a community comprised of individuals who are curious about their world.

Your enthusiasm makes working here a pleasure.

Kids “Buddy Up” to Promote Reading at LVDL this Summer
Children interested in sharing their love of books this summer should look no farther than the Lake Villa District Library’s “Book Buddies” program. For more than 12 years, Book Buddies has provided a unique opportunity for connecting older and younger readers.

Through the program, students entering first, second or third grade are matched with students entering sixth, seventh or eighth grade. During the month of July, these “Book Buddies” will meet at the library to read and talk about books. The “Senior Buddy” acts as a mentor, promoting an interest in books and encouraging the “Junior Buddy” to practice their new reading skills.

“I’m excited that this summer we are tweaking the program based on input from previous participants,” said Youth Services Associate Sue DeYoung, who coordinates the Book Buddies program. “Buddies and their parents should find it more user-friendly.”

Registration for Book Buddies begins June 2. For more information, click here or call Sue DeYoung at 847-356-7711, ext. 243.

It’s “Readin’ in the Wild West” this Summer at LVDL

The Lake Villa District Library invites area children to take part in another exciting Summer Reading Program beginning June 9. Every summer, the Youth Services Department registers close to 1,800 kids for its biggest reading incentive program. With this year’s theme of “Readin’ in the Wild West,” the library expects another record turnout of young “cowpokes” ready to reap rewards for reading.

“The Youth Services staff is already having a great deal of fun preparing for our summer trip to the Old West,” said Kerry Reed, Head of Youth Services. “As always, the department will be decked out to match our theme and the staff is contemplating their costumes.  It’s my hope that our efforts encourage an enthusiasm for pleasure reading while balancing the need to academically engage during the summer school break.”

The library’s Summer Reading Program runs from June 9 through August 30. All children through sixth grade are encouraged to participate. Registration will take place at the Youth Services Reference Desk. For more information, please call 847-356-7711 or send us an email by clicking here.

Youth Services Announces Important Change to Little Listeners Schedule

Due to temporary staffing constraints, the Youth Services Department regrets to inform patrons that we will not be able to offer Little Listeners "C" this June as scheduled. Little Listeners "A" and "B" are not affected.

We sincerely apologize for any confusion or disappointment this may cause. We would also like to emphasize that caregivers are welcome to register their 2-year-olds for our July storytime session. Dates and times will be announced in the upcoming June/July newsletter and on www.lvdl.org.

Little Listeners "C" will return in the fall.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us at 847-356-7711 or send us an email by clicking here.

We thank you in advance for your understanding!
