#OwnVoices is a hashtag started on Twitter by young adult author Corinne Duyvis. The term is meant to define marginalized characters written by marginalized writers. #OwnVoices was created to recommend children’s and young adult literature featuring diverse characters written by authors from that same diverse group. Since the first tweet on September 6, 2015, #OwnVoices has grown to include adult literature and to recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.
