October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in Lake County, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men will experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetimes. Please join A Safe Place, Lake County’s provider of domestic violence services, in a discussion to help raise awareness about violence in our communities and how it is being portrayed in the Emmy award winning HBO show Big Little Lies. Help us turn the page on domestic violence.

Please note: We ask that you bring only the registered child, as we want to make this program safe and fun for your baby. Your registration covers the full 6-week session.

The Illinois River, the state’s longest river, offers all kinds of shivery bumps in the night. Join author Sylvia Shults for a trip down the river to meet the folks who haven’t really left us even after they’ve left us. Book sale and signing will follow the presentation.

Library Buddies (Grades 9-12)

Monday, October 8, 2018 - 4:30pm to 6:15pm
(Grades 9-12) Earn volunteer hours and have a blast helping little kids explore art! During this four-week program, you’ll be paired up with a preschooler to learn about different artists’ work and try out their techniques. Things may get messy, so don’t wear your best clothes. To participate, you must attend the training session on October 1 (see above). Registration for this program begins on Saturday, September 1.

(Ages 3-5 years) In this librarian-led program, preschoolers will be paired with high-school volunteers to learn about different artists and try out their techniques themselves! Please dress your child for mess. Registration begins October 1 for the four-week session.

Zacharias Center: Resources to Combat Sexual Violence

Monday, October 8, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Join staff from Zacharias Center for an information session on sexual violence; a topic that some believe has become an epidemic. In addition to providing information on available services, ZCenter staff will review Erin’s Law, terminology and offer an understanding of sexual trauma, the grooming process, false reporting and how to handle a possible disclosure of a trauma.

Al Capone and the 1933 World’s Fair: The End of the Gangster Era in Chicago, by William Hazelgrove, is an exciting and sprawling history behind Chicago, the 1933 World’s Fair and the six millionaire businessmen, dubbed The Secret Six, who beat Al Capone at his own game. Book sale and signing will follow the presentation.
