Youth Services Reference Clerk

Lake Villa District Library (LVDL) is seeking an enthusiastic and customer-service oriented person to join our Youth Services team! It’s an exciting time at LVDL, as we look forward to moving into a new building in the not-too-distant future.

This part-time Reference Clerk position offers the opportunity to play a vital role in a very busy Youth Services Department. Duties include reference and reader’s advisory; handling registrations; troubleshooting minor equipment problems for patrons; providing important organizational support for Youth programs; and more.

Our ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and self-motivated, with experience in and comfort with Microsoft Office products and other office equipment. Relevant library experience working with youth and an interest in children’s literature is strongly preferred. We’re looking for someone who is flexible and has a strong customer-service orientation … a very healthy sense of humor is a plus!

This position reports to the Head of Youth Services and will collaborate with Youth Services staff as well as staff in other departments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Public library experience working with children preferred
  • Access to transportation

Hours

  • 15 hours/week
  • Weekday schedule will include regular morning and evening hours, plus weekend hours on a rotational basis.

Salary                          

  • $12.32/hour

Youth Services/Collection Development Librarian

Lake Villa District Library (LVDL) is seeking a savvy, enthusiastic and experienced librarian to provide a strong emphasis on collection development for the Youth Services Department. It’s an exciting time at LVDL, as we look forward to moving into a new building in the not-too-distant future.  We need someone to bring a strategic focus to shaping the direction of the Youth Services collection.

From developing new collections both virtual and physical; to evaluating how best to deploy current collections; to promotion and merchandising ... this job offers a wonderful opportunity for someone who is passionate about how to best provide a wide array of materials for the library’s many young patrons and their families. Reference desk work, outreach and programming will also be in the mix for this position.

Our ideal candidate will have experience in and a passion for collection development for children ages 0-12; an affinity for using statistics to help drive and evaluate collection development efforts; and a facility with online collection development tools. We’re looking for someone with creativity, excellent interpersonal skills and a very healthy sense of humor!

This position reports to the Head of Youth Services and will collaborate closely with Youth Services staff as well as staff in other departments.

Qualifications

  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of children's literature and media
  • Experience in collection development for children preferred
  • Public library experience—particularly working with children—preferred
  • Knowledge of child development preferred

Hours

Full-time, 37 hours/week. Schedule includes regular weekday hours (including one evening) and weekend hours on a rotational basis.

Salary                          

$21.54/hour BOQ, plus benefits.
