Volunteering

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Lake Villa District Library. Volunteering is a vital part of LVDL’s mission to enrich life in our community by connecting people with resources, services, spaces, and each other. LVDL values the time, enthusiasm, and energy volunteers bring to our library.

Volunteer Eligibility

  • Volunteers must be 12 years or older.
  • Volunteers assist with various library tasks without receiving remuneration.
  • LVDL may not be able to accommodate all volunteer requests.
  • LVDL does not track court-ordered or deferred prosecution community service hours.

Volunteer Guidelines

  • Volunteers must complete a volunteer application and be interviewed; a background check may be required.
  • Volunteers under 18 must have parent/guardian’s permission.
  • Volunteers are expected to be courteous and considerate of patrons, staff, and other volunteers.
  • Volunteers are required to follow the dress code policy of the library.
  • LVDL will select volunteers based on the needs of the library. Application forms will be kept on file for a period of one year.
  • LVDL reserves the right to reassign or dismiss a volunteer at any time.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer tasks vary based on current needs, with opportunities in the following areas:

  • Departmental Support: Cutting and filling scratch paper, cleaning audiovisual materials, cutting bookmarks or forms, and other office tasks.
  • Event Support: Assisting with set-up, clean-up, directing participants, and other tasks supporting special events.
  • Program Support: Assembling materials, assisting with set-up and clean-up, ushering participants, and providing support during programs.
  • Foundation Book Nook: Curating donated materials for the Book Nook.
  • Drop-In Volunteer Opportunities: Assisting staff with projects during designated volunteer programs. Refer to Connecting Newsletter or LVDL program calendar for listings. Volunteer application, interview, and Guidelines Acknowledgement are typically not required for these programs.

How to Get Started

  1. Please complete this online Volunteer Application Form.
  2. If qualified, you will be contacted via email to schedule an interview. Please check your "spam" or "junk" email folder periodically.
  3. Print, complete, and return the Volunteer Guidelines Acknowledgement which includes:
    • Parent/guardian permission for applicants under 18.
    • Policy against harassment for applicants 16 and over.
    • Background check authorization for those 18 and over.
