When Lake Villa District Library unveiled BUGS (an acronym for Best Unbelievably Great Summer) summer reading program last month, staff had no idea an insect artist and macro photographer was living in the community. That all changed when Ken Bluma reached out to the library.
Over 2000 people are participating in Lake Villa District Library’s 2024 Summer Reading Program, Best Unbelievably Great Summer or BUGS for short. And the program is just getting underway.
People of all ages are reading (or being read to) for chances to win great prizes. By setting a goal of reading a certain number of minutes each day and tracking progress along the way, they’re making reading a daily habit.
Ella Carraro, Sydney Friel and Jayashri Madan are the 2024 Friends of Lake Villa District Library Scholarship winners. Each will receive $1,000.00 to further their education in the upcoming school year.
Ella Carraro, Lakes Community High School, will be studying Art History at University of Wisconsin Parkside. Sydney Friel, also a Lakes High School graduate, will be attending Marquette University studying Nursing. Jayashri Madan, Grayslake North High School, will be studying Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering.
Work to enhance Lake Villa District Library’s front entrance and stepped terraces will begin over the next few weeks, bringing more seating options and shade to the area.
Two shade structures, laser-etched with hundreds of author names, will be installed on the stepped terraces. Two umbrella tables, equipped to provide power via solar panels, will be near the front entrance.
Organizations looking for volunteers and volunteers looking to give back will have the chance to meet at Lake Villa District Library’s Volunteer and Service Organization Recruitment Fair on Saturday, April 20 from 10am – 1pm.
Representatives from area non-profit organizations will be on hand to share information about their work and how individuals can help whether looking for a short-term project or long-term membership.
